The main social groups in Toguwaka period were:
1) Shogun
2) Warlords
3) Warriors
4) Peasant Farmers
In the Tokugawa period, feudalism prevailed in japan. Shogun was the head or feudal lord and under him were landlords, who would rule certain parts of the land. Warriors were ones who would protect their land from other lords. Peasant farmers like in England were given a piece of land and allowed to farm and in return they were expected to pay land taxes. They were both countryside’s and towns. Initially in countryside’s, peasant farmers, landlords and warriors used to live. Warriors besides levying the taxes were also administering peace justice and peace. Shogun in order to control the power of the warriors provided the stipend for those who moved into the towns so that he can watch them and warriors would become dependent on him. He provided stipends form the taxes he could get from peasant farmers. He neutralized the power of landlords by instituted a system according to which all the landlords with their families and shogun would party every alternative year. He then asked to build a residence in which the landlord’s family would stay so that they would become hostages if something he would do against shogun and landlord would be under control. It also helped landlord’s spending revenue so that it was distributed. Shogun started facing financial burden as the farmers resisted to pay their taxes. In the past warriors used to collect taxes but this was not possible now as they were moved to towns. Now, in order to collect taxes he built a bureaucratic apparatus like in England for the collection of revenue and he used reciprocity like building the roads between the countryside and towns so that the people in the countryside would sell the food in the town. He had also built schools, irrigation systems, etc. This led to increase in productivity of land which led to increase in the output of the farmers. This has led to increase in demand of proto manufacturing goods as the output retained by the farmers increased. It was experiencing economic efflorescence as per capita income was increasing but it would barrier and fall back because they were not good at applying science to production. So, they were limited with the traditional energy sources.
